2 of the following 6 tables do not contain official
color-names. The other 4 do –
and are so noted.
Official color-names may be used in place of the "hex-triplet" which is the standard method for designating any of the 16,777,216 colors commonly allowed in website browsers. There are 140 official color-names – but two are alternate names for the same color, id est: cyan/aqua & magenta/fuchsia. There are a total of 16,776,960 different colors – plus "black" and "white", and 254 true greys (usually spelled "gray"). |
| PALE | |||||
| FFeeee | eeFFee | eeeeFF | eeFFFF | FFeeFF | FFFFee |
| p-pink | p-green | p-blue | p-aqua | p-magenta | p-yellow |
|
The above 6 colors are simply heavily whitewashed versions of the following 6 colors – as you can readily see by examining their respective hex-triplets. To keep a color pale (usually to use as a background for text), but to get a little more "show" than in the examples above, change the "e" components of the hex-triplets to a "d", or possibly a "c" at the very max – but not any more. Remember: the further you get away from white, the more difficult text is to read on that background — and that encourages the visitor to dump your site. Another reason to keep your backgrounds very light is because old monitors lose their brightness, and you have no control over that. When in doubt, stick with WHITE – or one of the super-pales in the table above. |
| FULL (FF) – official names | |||||
| FF0000 | 00FF00 | 0000FF | 00FFFF | FF00FF | FFFF00 |
| red | lime | blue | aqua/cyan | fuchsia/magenta | yellow |
|
The above table shows a FULL saturation of one, or two, colors. The following table shows a HALF saturation of one, or two, colors, each yielding a darker version of the color above. |
| HALF (80) – official names | |||||
| 800000 | 008000 | 000080 | 008080 | 800080 | 808000 |
| maroon | green | navy | teal | purple | olive |
|
Though "teal" and "olive" are rarely used colors (in that they are rather ugly), I have included them simply because they are among the standard 6 "halvies." However, there are 6 other colors that are quite frequently used, and are featured in the following table. |
| OTHER FREQ USED – official names | |||||
| 8B4513 | FFFFFF | 000000 | FFA500 | 87CEEB | FFC0CB |
| Saddlebrown | White | Black | Orange | Skyblue | Pink |
|
It is difficult to find a good "brown" with an official color-name. Most of them are either too light, too grey-toned, or too red – as is the case with the one actually named "Brown" – so, "Saddlebrown" is the "cleanest" brown I've found – that is, with an official name – but even that is probably a little too light. The best brown may possibly be #582000 – which is the color of this text. The following 6 greys are exactly graduated between black (7) & white (0). They do not have names. |
| GREY | |||||
| 242424 | 494949 | 6D6D6D | 949494 | B6B6B6 | DBDBDB |
| grey-6 | grey-5 | grey-4 | grey-3 | grey-2 | grey-1 |
|
9 of the 140 official color-names are greys. 3 of the 9 are not true greys – they have a bluish-green tint – (Darkslategray - 2F4F4F) – (Slategray - 708090) – (Lightslategray - 778899). 6 of the 9 ARE true greys – shown in the following table, along with their respective place in the 0-7 greyscale. |
| GREY – official names | |||||
| 696969 | 808080 | A9A9A9 | C0C0C0 | D3D3D3 | DCDCDC |
| Dimgray | Gray | Darkgray | Silver | Lightgray | Gainsboro |
| grey-4.1 | grey-3.5 | grey-2.4 | grey-1.7 | grey-1.2 | grey-0.96 |
|
I know – "Gray" is actually DARKER than "Darkgray" – Sorry – I didn't name 'em. Neither the official color-names, nor the hex-triplets, are case-sensitive. So, customarily, upper or lower case works fine. But the spelling DOES matter – and some of the official color-names are long (like "mediumspringgreen") and are thereby prone to typing errors. — Be careful. |
